Porter Robinson wraps record-breaking Nurture Live tour

November 15, 2021—This weekend marked the final show of Porter Robinson’s Nurture Live tour, a two-month run that clocks in as the highest grossing electronic tour this year. The dates kicked off in September with the return of Porter’s much-lauded Second Sky festival in Oakland—an instant sell out, 40,000 person, two-day event—and included two nights at Los AngelesState Historic Park, three nights at Brooklyn’s Avant Gardner, Seattle’s WAMU Theater and many more, with almost every single date selling out.
Second Sky, which grew by a third this year after launching in 2019, saw live sets from a lineup curated by Porter including Madeon, Jai Wolf, Toro Y Moi, Jon Hopkins and more. The festival also marked the live debut of Porter’s Nurture live show. Fans enjoyed a one-of-a-kind festival experience at the Oakland Arena Grounds with environments created by Nassal and B Morrow Productions (builders of Universal’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Disney’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge).
All of these live dates came in support of Porter’s widely-lauded second LP, Nurture, released in April. The album, Porter’s first in seven years, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart (the first to do so since Kylie Minogue in November 2020), held 12 of the top 50 Billboard Dance/Electronic Songs upon release and topped charts at iTunes and Spotify. The album brought Porter’s career streams to date to over 1 billion across platforms,
Nurture continues to receive critical praise…
Nurture explores the difficulty of finding fulfillment and plumbs the joyful realization that the world he wanted to create was always right in front of him…Robinson sings with a newfound clarity on Nurture, writing directly about his struggles and the ecstatic realizations that have come from hard times.”—Pitchfork
Nurture is soft, gentle, sweet and painfully-honest. These lyrics are daringly raw, tying the freedom of love with the cage of mortality, exploring the inherent pain of soulfulness, and the awkward dichotomy of insecurity and explosion that makes the act of creation so pure.”—Billboard
“Nearly seven years after releasing Worlds, Porter Robinson is back with his sophomore project Nurture. It’s a beautiful album, filled with little moments of joy and wonder, and it serves as an introduction to Porter Robinson the pop artist.”—The FADER
“Victory pop at its finest”—Entertainment Weekly
Nurture is welcoming and vulnerable from beginning to end, radiating gratitude for all who take the time to find refuge in it.”—Paste
Praise for Nurture live…
“It was cathartic as heck, a real cleansing of the spirit, group therapy on astroturf. It’s an amazing thing to feel that safe and unashamed in such a large group of people, all while being so immaculately entertained. That almost certainly means Second Sky will be around for many years to come.”—Billboard
“If the intent of the record was to express an appreciation for things like the crisp breeze on one’s skin, the soft brush of grass in the cool shade, or the warmth of sunshine on one’s face, those that got to attend the return of Second Sky got to experience Robinson’s vision to its fullest, most robust degree.”—Dancing Astronaut
“a starry-eyed celebration of vulnerability, of togetherness, of life.”—The Daily Cal
“Robinson offered fans the perfect remedy to the nearly two years they’ve gone without live music, but he also showcased his own growth as an artist and as a performer, especially as Nurture is his first full-length in nearly seven years.”—Variance
Between Second Sky and the two pandemic iterations of his livestream festival Secret Sky, Porter and his fans raised nearly $150,000 for MusiCares and more than $125,000 for Porter’s own charity, the Robinson Malawi Fund, a joint venture with UNC Medicine which benefits children battling Burkitt lymphoma in Malawi.

At age 18, North Carolina-based producer and songwriter Porter Robinson burst onto the scene with a complex, bombastic brand of electronic music. Following the major success of his 2014 debut album Worlds, Porter released the Gold single “Shelter” with Madeon in 2016 and embarked on the Shelter Live Tour spanning 43 dates and four continents. The following year, Porter began releasing music under a new alias, Virtual Self, which lead to his first Grammy nomination for the BBC Radio 1 hit single “Ghost Voices.” In 2019, Porter put on the first Second Sky festival, which sold out all 30,000 tickets for the two-day festival in a single day.
