“Music is a wake-up call.  After the protest, you listen to it and it helps keep you awake. Because the problem is not to wake up — it’s not to go back to sleep.” – William Parker
Throughout March, Arts for Art (AFA) will continue twice-weekly livestream performances that celebrate and acknowledge the music of the Free Jazz community born from the African American experience. AFA Salons are fast becoming a fertile creative platform for exciting new collaborations between musicians and visual artists or occasionally poets and dancers.
This month AFA pays tribute to Amina Claudine Myers who will receive at the LifeTime Achievement Award at Vision 25 in July, 2021.  On March 21—the birthday of this seminal pianist, singer—AFA will present Myers in a special performance and conversation.
A founding member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), Myers began composing for voice and instruments and appearing on classic AACM records.  She has become well known for her work involving voice choirs, voice and instrumental ensemble, musical theater, and a robust exploration of the pipe organ, all while seamlessly blending the blues, jazz, gospel and extended forms.   Learn more about Amina here.
A March 16 highlight will feature a performance of William Parker’s “The Blinking of the Ear” that will include his visual art through the video of Miriam Parker.
“Arts for Art brings the power of Free Jazz to lead and inspire in the face of attacks on truth, freedom, democracy and on justice for all people, especially people of color,” says founder and artistic director, Patricia Nicholson.
Tickets are available through Eventbrite with a $5 minimal donation (additional ticket information at Arts for Art).  All performers are paid.
